The Little Mandarin Spark Adventure

Little Mandarin Spark is the first project developed under Mandarin Spark, an initiative dedicated to creating meaningful Mandarin experiences for different ages.

Little Mandarin Spark is an early years Mandarin enrichment experience that combines language learning with the wider aims of the EYFS.

The first adventure is a five-week mini programme consisting of one 30-minute session each week, designed for children aged 2–6, with its sweet spot between three and five.

A Mandarin enrichment designed for the early years

At its heart, Little Mandarin Spark is a participatory story world. Each week, children step into the same world, meet the same three friends, and experience language through friendship, play, caregiving, and hands-on exploration. Every story, song, game and activity belongs to one continuous adventure.

Three friends. One story world. Adventures children want to join

Curiosity. Confidence. A Love of Exploration

We believe that some of the most valuable things children develop in the early years are the curiosity to ask, the confidence to try, and the desire to explore what is unfamiliar.

For many children, Mandarin offers exactly that opportunity. It sounds different. It looks different. It helps broaden their horizons and opens the door to a much bigger world.

Through meaningful relationships, imaginative play and emotionally safe participation, Little Mandarin Spark invites children to wonder, to try, and to discover that they can. They leave with joyful memories of meeting a new language and making new friends, carrying with them the confidence to embrace new experiences and the curiosity to keep exploring throughout their lives.

The early years are precious, and every experience chosen for children matters. We simply hope that, where our values align, Little Mandarin Spark might become part of your journey.

A Child’s Experience

A child's experience sits at the heart of Little Mandarin Spark. We believe that, in the early years, the way children experience learning shapes not only what they learn today, but also how they feel about learning itself and the intrinsic motivation they carry into the future.

This is why a Little Mandarin Spark session does not feel like a lesson. Instead, children feel they are talking, singing, dancing, playing, and setting off on hands-on adventures with three familiar friends. Along the way, they discover and learn Mandarin.

We could never describe the experience better than the children themselves, or the teachers and families who have shared it. Explore our Pilot Reflections to hear their voices.

Beyond The First Adventure

For some schools, this first adventure is enough: a joyful introduction to Mandarin that sparks curiosity and creates lasting memories.

For others, it may be the beginning of something more. The adventure can continue beyond these first five weeks, with opportunities for schools to explore further chapters as Little Mandarin Spark continues to grow.

And if a school’s journey comes to an end, a child’s journey does not have to. Families who wish to continue can keep exploring through the Little Mandarin Spark Club, bringing adventures with Bubu and Friends into everyday life at home.

Whether the next adventure happens at school or at home, our hope remains the same: that children can keep returning to a world they love, in whatever way feels right for them and their families.

The Thinking Behind the Adventure

Little Mandarin Spark was created by Dr Tina Yang, a mother, language education researcher and experienced teacher of Mandarin as a foreign language.

It began with a simple question: How can we help children fall in love with learning?

Every part of the programme has been developed in-house. Language is introduced through carefully chosen small steps, balancing what children naturally want to say with what is genuinely useful in Mandarin. Chinese characters are explored as symbols to discover and play with, supporting broader cognitive development alongside language learning.

Like childhood itself, Little Mandarin Spark is never truly finished. New ideas, classroom observations and research all feed back into its development, ensuring that Little Mandarin Spark remains thoughtful, continually evolving and always centred on the child’s experience.

We hope the Little Mandarin Spark world becomes a joyful childhood memory, and perhaps the first step into a much bigger world.
